IMBA TRAIL CARE CREW VISITS
LAS VEGAS - July 2002
Welcomed by BARTA President Judy Brandt, Hot Rocks patrol director, Matt
Carter, and BLM Recreational Planner Suzanne Shelp, the IMBA / Subaru
Trail Care Crew #2 stopped this last July 24-28 in Las Vegas. The trail
care crew of Lora Woolner and Mark Schmidt conducted a number of evening
trail building schools and daytime trail work in southern Nevada.
The evenings consisted of IMBA’s PowerPoint trail building presentation on
how to plan and build fun and sustainable trails. The trail work was
completed out near the Cottonwood / Blue Diamond area.
Working on a
section not officially named, but known as the Mud Springs Bypass trail (aka
the "cactus garden"), the trail crew and volunteers “armored” a nasty sandy
section. By laying aggregates and larger, bomber rocks on to which the
trail tread was to be routed. Very time and labor intensive – but more
natural and long lasting than man made materials (such as geomesh)
which are typically more expensive and tend to need constant maintenance
.
Kudos to those involved helping to make the Las Vegas area a great place
to ride: Sarah Sutherland (Outdoor recreation Planner - BLM), Nick Torres
District Ranger US Forest Service, Suzanne Shelp BLM Recreation planner,
Judy Brandt (BARTA President), Rob Hayes (BARTA Board of directors), Matt
Carter (Hot Rocks National Mountain Bike Patrol), ans SNRTP (Southern Nevada
Recreational Trails Partnership) .
