HUFAKER HILLS TRAIL SYSTEM BEGINS
The start of a new trail system begun this May 2004 in
the little island of hills just south Rattlesnake Mountain in south Reno.
When completed, this trail system should provide five to eight miles of
trail for walkers, hikers and bikers. With the Double Diamond and Damonte Ranch developments, this area will afford a close escape to the
developing south meadows and offer many vista points for great views of
the Sierra's and the Virginia range.

On Saturday May 8 aproximately seventy individuals helped to start the
first one mile loop of this trail system. Approximately one month later on
National Trails Day (June 5), the first loop was completed.

The trailhead can be reached from an unmarked, paved haul road located on
the southeast corner of McCarran and Longley Lane. The road takes off from
the south side of McCarran, near a Sierra Pacific electrical substation.
There will be a sign indicating that the trail event is one mile up a
winding road. A fenced parking area is next to a large, brown water tank
at
the crest of the hill.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
"On Saturday, May 8, a team of approximately 75 volunteers turned out to
help build a portion of the new Huffaker Hills trail near Rattlesnake
Mountain. Thanks to the fantastic effort put out by the Truckee Meadows
Trails Association and Sierra Pacific Power Company, a substantial section
of trail was constructed.
Washoe County Parks especially salutes Dick Benoit of TMTA and Karen
Foster of SPPCO for their incredible energy, enthusiasm, and effort. Thank
you to all who volunteered to help build the trail."
