Peavine Mountain Roads and Recreation Strategy (Reno) In mid December of 2002, the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest released its strategy to address the many issues facing Peavine Mountain. The objective of the analysis was to provide information for site-specific decisions, to set priorities for management actions, and to identify special situations needing attention. While it does contain specific recommendations, it is not a decision document. Any ground disturbing, site specific action that would be taken as a result of those recommendations will require an environmental analysis. This will include further opportunities for public comment. In the next 12 to 18 months expect the following actions to include: * staging and parking area construction at Keystone Canyon * designating the Keystone Canyon area for non-motorized recreation * detailed engineering review of the proposed back bone road system * closing the 7th Street pits to off-road vehicle use and improved signing * developing a trail plan for hiking and mountain biking The document was jointly prepared by the Forest Service and planners from the City of Reno and Washoe County, with a number of public input meetings and input period last fall. |
"Upon completion of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements, the USFS can enlist the assistance of volunteer bicycle organizations, such as the Reno Wheelmen, Procrastinating Pedalers, or I.M.B.A. to construct trail, install route markers and sign trailheads" Excerpt from Recommendations / Non-motorized Use & Trails
