ACCESS GROUP FORMS — WASHOE COUNTY BACKCOUNTRY COALITION With encroaching developments making the headlines, an informal group representing hikers, bicyclists, 4-wheel drivers and motorcyclists have joined together to muster support, provide direction, and to preserve and maintain access for backcountry recreation in Washoe County. The recently released USFS Peavine Roads and Recreation Plan has been a long awaited, and the groundwork, paperwork, and legal obligations have been laid. But ahead is the task of implementing a recreation plan. The idea behind a coalition of users, is to address the needs of the various user groups to streamline the flow of information and ideas to the USFS. The group will use its resources to concentrate on Peavine in the immediate future, but access issues are pressing in many more locales. In the Peavine plan, the first phase will be the assessment and signage of the motorized back bone road system, with a priority to accommodate fire suppression vehicles. In the second phase, concentrating around Keystone Canyon, the USFS will be working on staging and access areas, with consideration of new trail links and loops in the vicinity. The WCBC members will be meeting to help formulate a plan for the area and give its recommendations to the USFS. If you have any ideas and or concerns related to this, please feel free to contact Carl Adams or any of the WCBC representatives listed below.
