Nevada State Parks in cooperation with the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Backcounrty Patrol, the Reno Wheelmen, and the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) will host young riders, ages 6 to 16, for a youth mountain biking event. The ride is part of a nationwide celebration known as Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day, supported by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA).

The event occurs on Saturday, October 1, beginning at 9:30 am at the Spooner Lake entrance of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Participants must bring a bike and helmet and a parent or guardian to sign the participation form. Parents and friends are welcome and encouraged to ride, too. There is no fee for the event, however there is an entrance fee to access the state park.

There will be safe riding information, bike safety checks, riding tips, and informal skill clinics. Groups of kids with similar skills will then be taken on the beginner trail around Spooner Lake by experienced bike patrol members. Goodie bags will be given to the first 50 kids to show up.

IMBA’s International Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day celebrates the life of Jack Doub, an avid teenage mountain biker from North Carolina who had a true passion for the sport from an early age to the time when he passed away in 2002. Event funding is provided by the Jack Doub Memorial Endowment. Additional support comes from CLIF Kids, the National Park Service and Smartwool.

Additional assistance for the celebration is provided by Trips for Kids, an organization that has been helping disadvantaged kids discover mountain biking since 1988. Trips for Kids chapters nationwide make a difference in kids’ lives by opening their world to mountain biking.

The Sierra Cup Mountain Bike Racing Series wraps up the 2011 season on October 2 with the Sawtooth Ridge Challenge at Northstar Resort in North Lake Tahoe. The Sierra Cup is a seven race point series to determine the USA Cycling cross-country mountain bike champions for the Northern California/Nevada region. Many racers have participated in the series to qualify for the national championships.

The Sawtooth Ridge Challenge, like the other Sierra Cup events, is donating event proceeds to bicycle related causes. Benefitting from this race will be the Truckee Trails Foundation and the Northstar/Giant development team. The events have also partnered with Waste Not in Incline Village to meet or exceed zero-waste standards.

Racers will ride a 7 mile course that was developed by Northstar Resort for last year’s Collegiate National Championships. Racers will complete multiple laps of the course depending on their ability category. The course will have an exciting mix of trails that include small features like jumps, berms and technical descents. The climbs are spread out to allow time for riders to recover.

There are age and ability categories for all levels of riders. Custom recycled medals are awarded to the top finishers in each category as well as series points. After the race awards, there will be a podium ceremony for the overall series winners. Besides the regional championship medals from USA Cycling, there is also a $1500 series purse for top riders.

Sponsors for the Sierra Cup series include GU Energy, Wilderness Trail Bikes, CytoSport, Black Rock Bicycles, Sierra Cyclesmith, Velo Reno, Voler, Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicyles, Santa Cruz Bicycles, SCHEELS, Specialized, Resource Revival, Adventure Sports Journal, and Cycle California! Sponsoring the Sawtooth Ridge Challenge are Cyclepaths or Truckee, Dude Girl, Reno Cycling & Fitness, and Northstar Resort.

Online pre-registration is available at BikeReg.com. It is $35 with a discounted rate of $20 for women and junior categories. For more information visit www.renowheelmen.org. The Sierra Cup Series is on facebook at www.facebook.com/SierraCupMTB.

There has been a date change for the last race in the Twilight Series held at Sky Tavern Ski Area. It will be held on WEDNESDAY night, June 29 instead of the previously scheduled June 30. This is to fit better with the Peavine Challenge that was re-scheduled for Saturday, June 2. Same plan for a BBQ after the race, series prizes to be awarded, and our largest twilight raffle to be held. The course was a favorite and for those who can’t wait to ride high elevations this is your first chance, the last of the snow was plowed from the road today. Reg opens at 6pm, race at 6:30, food/drinks and awards around 7:30-8:00.

Series points standings will be posted by Sunday night.

The UNR Stage race takes place over the next 3 days. Proceeds from this event goes to benefit the UNR cycling team so there are a few different rules to this event.

As this is a fund raiser for Nevada Cycling entry into each event of the Stage Race is $10.00 for each person, there are no discounts for being a reno wheelmen member, or reduced entry for women and juniors or comp entires for last years event winners. I will not be enforcing the Reno Wheelmen membership or series registration requirement during this week.
