GALENAFEST AND THE RENO-TAHOE BLOODY ROSE
In order to provide our community with an outstanding event in 2012, the GalenaFest family festival will skip a year in 2011. The Reno Wheelmen have stepped in to help produce the Reno Tahoe Bloody Rose hill climb on Saturday, September 17, 2011. This partnership will provide continuity as the full GalenaFest festival gears up for its return in 2012.
ABOUT THE RENO-TAHOE BLOODY ROSE
The Bloody Rose, sponsored by Watson Rounds LLC and JetLites, provides mountain bikers with one of the most challenging events in the western United States. 12.2 miles in length at an average of 6.5 percent gradient, the course throws in several sections steeper than 15 percent, mixing in single track, fire roads and sections of pavement.
See the course map.

ABOUT THE COURSE
The Start will be at Galena Regional Park off of Mount Rose Hwy. It will be a single mass start at 9am. The first true test for riders is “Dead Chrysler Ridge” followed by the aptly named “Wall of Death” where knobby tires will fight for traction on the sandy surface. Continuing up the mountain, survivors will pass over the highest year-round road in the Sierras, get a brief downhill respite, then commence a death march up Forest Service Road 051 to the summit of Relay Peak. Those four miles are as much about survival as they are about speed. Riders will curse the small downhill when they make the final hairpin for the last quarter mile climb. When “Funeral Hill” ramps up to 16 percent, riders will have to dodge softball-sized rocks while searing their lungs at almost two miles above sea level. At this point, many get off to walk. Those who make it up the 4,000 foot climb to the 10,335 foot summit will be rewarded with amazing views of Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley – and a sense of accomplishment unmatched by any other race. There will be Cytomax, Water, snacks and an EMT at the finish along with a photographer to document your achievement. The view from the top.
